Scientific & Regulatory Engagement Manager

121 Winterstoke Road | 121 Winterstoke Road UKI Cluster | England | United Kingdom | BS3 2LL

About us

Imperial Brands PLC is a dynamic FTSE100 FMCG company headquartered in Bristol with a global workforce of around 32,000 people. Our ambition is to create Something Better for the world’s smokers through a wide portfolio of scientifically substantiated Next Generation Products (NGPs), which include the global e-vapour brand blu.

With a presence across the EU and in Africa, Asia and the Americas, we offer opportunities to set the strategic direction across multiple markets.

The role

Location: Flexible - North West or Bristol

Permanent, Full time

Competitive Salary + Benefits

Many of today’s most pressing and controversial regulations for Next Generation Products are founded on misconceptions, read across from tobacco/pharmaceutical product regulation and rooted in poor scientific practice and interpretation. This creates a widening gulf between the scientific and political policy communities, arising at a time when the need for discussion and co-operation is paramount.

As the Scientific & Regulatory Engagement Manager you will be joining a growing Strategic Science and Policy Engagement group focused on informing public attitudes and technical regulation through various avenues and channels. You will be responsible for managing scientific & technical regulatory issues to achieve IMB’s regulatory and commercial objectives, and leading the engagement with key stakeholders to support the NGP portfolio and concept of tobacco harm reduction along with its benefits for the world’s smokers.

Key accountabilities

  • Become the company SME and spokesperson for scientific & regulatory issues relating to flavour, vaping restrictions, product standards (and national and international e.g. CEN/ISO levels) among others.
  • Represent IMB externally on scientific & technical product regulatory issues through direct engagement, including attending and presenting at influential conferences.
  • Provide scientific & technical advice and support on key regulatory issues and development of campaign plans for regulatory issues.
  • Monitor emerging regulatory issues and drive business awareness of emerging regulatory issues and trends through cross-functional engagement and training to assist business strategy
  • Drive robust scientific responses to unreasonable regulatory restrictions in collaboration with Corporate Affairs and support the Science Comms Manager.
  • Development and delivery of effective scientific & regulatory messaging in conjunction with Group Science and Corporate Affairs to build consumer confidence, ensure robust evidence-based policy development and ensure the company is viewed as the credible source of scientific & regulatory information.
  • Develop, maintain and leverage a network of key opinion leaders in public health, academia and industry; contribute to the scientific debate around NGPs at every opportunity
  • Manage a team of scientific & regulatory affairs specialists focusing on the core areas of our NGP portfolio. Work together with colleagues in Group Science to translate our complex scientific research findings into engaging copy for both lay and government/regulator audiences in collaboration with the Science Comms Manager.
  • Produce and manage a detailed scientific publication and conference attendance plan that will enable IMB to communicate the complex science behind our NGP portfolio and harm reduction assessment approaches on a frequent basis.

Skills & experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in a highly regulated product category, with a passion for science, technology and regulatory engagement
  • Strategic perspective, able to assess and relate impacts of regulatory trends and initiatives on our business over short and long term
  • Understanding of the primary drivers of tobacco regulation at a global and local level
  • Skills in developing and executing appropriate engagement activities identifying key messaging.
  • Familiarity with the latest NGP science research
  • Ability to analyse and then critique complex and detailed scientific research papers

Desirable

  • An understanding of the differing NGP political and regulatory landscapes
  • Network of key opinion leaders
  • Experience in product standardisation (e.g. national standards bodies, CEN or ISO).
