The role

The role is responsible for driving the strategic and scientific direction for our Next Generation Product (NGP) portfolio related activities to ensure necessary regulatory science is conducted to enable on time and successful product launches in markets (not US) in line with commercial plans.

The role works closely with & delivers through the subject matter experts across our Group Science & Regulatory Affairs (GSRA) team thereby significantly reducing the handoffs between GSRA and the rest of the business. The role holder will ensure delivery of high quality regulatory science data that supports the defence of current NGP in addition to the necessary Environment Social and Governance (ESG) Science to support Imperial’s corporate tobacco harm reduction objectives, by setting the strategic direction and study plans for all scientific studies that will be executed via GSRA SMEs. The NGP Science Manager will have a deep understanding and lead for one of the NGP categories and sufficient understanding to support and cover for the other NGP categories.

Key accountabilities

Strategic scientific lead on & drives operational science delivery of NGP Launch projects. Creates & drives tactical plans to support new product launches in line with commercial plans and supports defence of current products to ensure ongoing commercial viability; demonstrate best-in-class cross-functional organization, communication and management between multiple teams in different departments.

Be a conduit to the Harm Reduction & Engagement (HRE) and Corporate & Legal Affairs teams to align on strategic directions, and other departments to ensure compliance and submission in line with tobacco/NGP regulations.

NGP Engagement in markets - The role holder will be required to provide NGP subject matter expertise on priority scientific & technical regulatory issues in markets, represent the company at relevant national (UK-BSI), European (CEN) and global (ISO) standardisation bodies and working groups and internal/external scientific meetings in order  to inform scientifically substantiated standards.

Provide scientific & technical advice and support on key regulatory issues and drive research to support NGPs. The role holder will be required to work in collaboration with HRE to define and drive the planning and delivery of scientific research to support the development of products and to share the research in the public domain in order to build consumer and regulator confidence.

Additionally, the role holder will be explaining how the science contributes to Imperial’s consumer health ESG KPIs and tobacco harm reduction, making complex science accessible to a lay audience.

Skills & experience

Essential

  • Post-graduate Degree in relevant science
  • Demonstrated experience (5-10 years) in a highly regulated product category
  • Broad understanding of the business and its current future challenges
  • Skills in developing and executing appropriate scientific and technical research activities in co-ordination with key stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse complex and detailed scientific and technical issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with an ability to build relationships internally and externally across a diverse stakeholder network
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to tailor the science to audiences very different levels of understanding
  • Project management skills
  • People leadership experience


Desirable

  • In depth understanding of one or more of Imperial’s NGP categories
