The role

A new Head of Department role within Imperial's Insights function, leading the Data Science arm of the Data & Analytical services Team By enabling Imperial to deliver advanced analytical techniques more consistently across geographies, this role is critical in providing the robust, scientific foundations for better decision-making Additional Information Imperial Brands is currently undergoing a strategic transformation to become a consumer-centric organisation and the new Insights function will be a crucial driving force behind this change, placing consumer preferences and demands at the centre of commercial decision making to gain competitive advantage.

Within the overall function, the Data & Analytical Services team provides services that allow actionable insight to be produced.

Its role is to:

1. Embed data science within Imperial's business processes and ability to make key decisions

2. Drive alignment via standardised consumer reporting to the business

3. Transform how we use consumer data, driving standardised best practice across the business Reporting into the Data & Analytical Services Director, this position aligns to the first of these areas.

Their role is to centralise Imperial's data science expertise delivering standardised advanced analytical products which can be utilised by markets across the business.

The Head of Data Science will set best-practice standards for how data science techniques can be used to generate insights across key business processes. Building on the pockets of expertise that currently exist, this position will ensure that the benefits of data science are available to all.

Key accountabilities

  • Define best-practice standards for data science and advanced analytical techniques, and ensure these are adhered to by the Data Science team
  • Work closely with colleagues within Consumer and Market Insights (CMI) to identify where data science is needed to inform insights within the key business processes. Formulate standardised analytical 'products' that can meet priority needs across geographies, and own the creation of guides, assets and toolkits to deploy these products.

Oversee the ability in your analytics team to deliver the following:

  • Work with the CMI team and the Head of Consumer Research, to design and execute cross-category consumer segmentation(s)
  • Deliver profit pool and economic modelling to inform strategic planning · Work with the Insights Technology Product Manager to help deliver an eCRM B2B analytics platform
  • Design automated systems and models for initiative evaluation, initiative planning / scenario / propensity modelling, and automated base forecasting to inform sales, manufacturing and distribution
  • Deliver pricing simulators and pricing optimisation tools using prescriptive analytics / recommendation engines
  • Work closely with the Interim Data & Reporting Lead, Group IT and the Central Data Function to equip you and your team with the required data, tools and technology
  • Identify opportunities to optimise Imperial's analytical capabilities, bringing an 'outside in' market view of new and better techniques. Work closely with insight colleagues to explore how analytics can enhance data systems, research and reporting techniques.
  • Coach insight business partners and other members of the insight community to achieve a baseline understanding in data science. Where relevant, help them hone practical skills such as identifying patterns and trends, root cause analysis, data mining etc.
  • Line manage a team of up to c.6-8 Data Scientists and Junior Data scientists, and develop them via coaching, training and mentorship.
  • Co-ordinate the transition of the team from its interim to final state, making sure that its skillset evolves as business needs change, e.g. from more bespoke to more standardised projects.

Responsibility for prioritising requests and allocating resource to meet priority business needs

  • Assist the Data & Analytical Services Director in raising awareness of the central data science team, setting clear expectations about capacity and ways of working

Skills & experience


  • Degree or higher qualification in an applied analytical field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in leading analytics or data science practices
  • Expert knowledge of coding languages, reporting / visualisation packages and databases, analytical engines, data warehouses / lakes etc
  • Consummate experience with a wide spectrum of data science techniques, with the ability to apply them to solve business problems
  • Ability to speak the language of both analytics and business insights, and translate one to the other
  • Simultaneously comfortable with depths of technical detail (e.g. data, platforms and techniques) and able to see the bigger picture (e.g. to build data science strategies, and apply them to end-to-end business processes)
  • Innovative and inventive mindset in the hunt for continuous improvement
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, to coach and nurture a team
  • Enthusiasm for passing down knowledge / skills


  • Experience in leading analytics or data science practices globally, or across multiple geographies
  • Proven track record of delivering significant commercial value from data science techniques
