The Role

To conduct product characterisation scientific studies to enable Imperial Brands (IMB) to launch, protect & defend its NGP & Combustible portfolio and influence the development of science-based regulation and product/technical standards. Design chemical testing approaches to meet needs of the regulatory submissions; direct the testing of products both internally and with external contract research organisations (CROs); interpret and communicate the scientific data to a wide range of stakeholders across IMB and with external stakeholders (e.g. national and international standardisation bodies). Contribute necessary chemistry studies that support and substantiate Imperial Brands’ meaningful contribution to tobacco harm reduction.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Act as product characterisation Subject Matter Expert (SME) on a range of projects covering I2L NGP, PMTA and other Regulatory and Research projects. 
  • Design and lead scientific protocols to understand the chemical and physical product characteristics of IMB NGP portfolio and identify NGP with substantially reduced risk profile. Assess, evaluate and interpret data to support product launch and defence. Interpretation and packaging of data with associated narratives and key messages.
  • Contribute to the development of scientific research of IMB NGP portfolio to challenge and ensure that proposed regulations / product standards development are based on robust and scientifically substantiated argumentation and develop strong messaging to proposals that undermine tobacco harm reduction.
  • Create innovative solutions to effectively manage the impact of current and future regulations on commercial portfolio and laboratories workload.
  • Protect and defend NGP business interests by providing to the business in-depth research support, specialist guidance, and advocacy on relevant issues.
  • Engage with the scientific, public health, and regulatory communities through face-to-face meetings, regulatory filings, publications in scientific literature, participation in scientific conferences and product standardisation forums where we present our research and company positions.
  • Work in close collaboration with Scientific Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Affairs and other relevant functions to communicate findings of product characterisation science both internally and externally.

Education, Key-Skills & Experience

Essential

  • 1st Degree in appropriate scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience (at least 2 years) in a product characterisation study design, with a knowledge and passion for science, technology and regulatory affairs.
  • Statistical evaluation knowledge and data interpretation.
  • Strong and proven project management and external collaborations skills.
  • Creative thinking and intellectual curiosity paired with a strong ability to understand complex relationships.
  • Solutions focussed with ability to prioritise as appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate easily across cultures and organisational levels.
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to foster cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong influencing skills and experience g. negotiating & driving clarity with external suppliers
  • Constructively challenges to drive results.

Desirable

  • PhD in appropriate science.
  • Practical Analytical Chemistry lab experience.
  • Understanding of NGP and Tobacco Product science.
  • Experience in engaging externally with influential expert scientists.
  • Willingness to travel internationally when required.
  • Yellow Belt/ CI Experience.
