The role

To lead and develop Imperial Brands’ Sustainability strategy aligned with internal and external expectations around environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibilities. Leading on the implementation, monitoring and reporting of progress against the strategy, as required by a UK Plc. To be responsible for developing and managing Imperial’s response to human rights issues, focussing on child labour and modern slavery in supply chains.

Key accountabilities

Overall responsibility for the Group’s Sustainability Strategy · Lead on and develop the Group’s sustainability strategy, aligned with best practice and evolving external expectations including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ensuring the strategy continues to evolve inline with the implementation of the Group’s 2025 strategy. · Lead on external stakeholder engagement to inform and validate Imperial’s approach to sustainability through managing materiality assessments, convening of external stakeholder panels and engagement with appropriate industry experts · Direct and develop Imperial’s global Non-financial Reporting (NFR) System to collect group wide environmental and OHS data to support public reporting aligned to the sustainability strategy · Lead on Imperial’s public disclosure of ESG responsibilities and performance against the sustainability strategy within the ‘Sustainability’ section of the Group website and within the Annual Report and Accounts · Manage the third-party annual data verification process conducted by PwC · Ensure that the company participates and performs in the appropriate investor led ESG questionnaires and benchmarks including the Carbon Disclosure Project and Workforce Disclosure Initiative · Respond to lobbyists and activists, enabling Group Communications and Group Corporate Affairs to mitigate negative media, political and regulatory attention · Maintain and develop appropriate internal networks to keep abreast of company developments, positions and activities · Train relevant senior management on Imperial’s ESG responsibilities (i.e. the Director of Treasury) · Mitigate reputational risks by helping to set the correct Policy positions and internal controls including Community Involvement, Human Rights and Environment. · Partner with Internal Audit and Risk to develop a mechanism to mitigate ESG risk through the company’s governance systems · Maintain and develop professional competences to keep abreast of the evolving responsibility and sustainability agenda, including participation in relevant external forums and events, maintaining an external network of contacts within the sphere of sustainability · Understand potential performance gaps or changing requirements through the monitoring of external developments, stakeholder engagements and information from relevant benchmark participation · Exhibit budget and people manager disciplines for effective financial management and team morale Lead the development of Imperial’s Group Environmental Strategy · Lead on the development of group environmental targets for the next 10-30 years in the areas of energy, carbon, waste and water · In line with evolving investor interest, lead on Imperial’s response to the Taskforce on Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) · Develop Group wide environmental KPIs, monitoring performance through the NFR System · Devise and monitor the implementation of the Group environmental targets · Partnering with key internal stakeholders, lead the development of an implementation plan to achieve the group targets · Lead on environmental performance disclosure in line with UK GHG mandatory reporting requirements · Promote and raise awareness of new emerging environmental issues and trends especially in relation to NGP, advising NGP Product Innovation Director and CLA · Provide environmental insights and performance to OPEX and PLC Board to help drive improvements Address Business and Human Rights · Manage and respond to human rights issues on behalf of the PLC Board (i.e. the UN High Commission on Human Rights) · On an annual basis write and update the Modern Slavery Statement, in line with the UK Modern Slavery Act (2015) for approval by the PLC Board. · Manage global partnerships with key NGOs to help respond to the issue of modern slavery, including Hope for Justice and Slave Free Alliance

Skills & experience

· Strategic thinking with an ability to align the sustainability agenda to the commercial business strategy and context · Educated to degree level with relevant professional qualifications i.e. Masters level degree in Sustainability/ Member of the Institute of CR and Sustainability · Proactive in responding to legislative and investor requirements · Culturally aware with the ability to engage with both sustainability and non-sustainability professionals globally · Ability to challenge conventional thinking, whilst bringing a passion for collaboration · Exceptional interpersonal skills and relationship building · Experience of leading teams and working cross-functionally · Change management and enabling new ways of working · Ability to draw upon and apply company positions · Excellent organisational awareness · Willingness to travel internationally
