The Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Governance Manager to join a new enterprise-wide data organisation within Imperial Brands. This role represents a fantastic opportunity for an experienced data professional to accelerate our journey towards becoming a data-driven business through the implementation and coordination of data governance initiatives. 

In this role you will be leading the implementation of the data governance framework, promoting a culture of data ownership by establishing data governance roles across the organisation, and coordinating data governance activities, including the implementation of data governance forums across the functions. You will also help contribute to the development of an enterprise-wide data strategy and vision.

You will need to be an experienced data professional with experience of implementing and managing data governance activities, an excellent understanding of data management and governance best practices, and a proficient communicator able to deliver change in a complex, global organisation.

Working with stakeholders in all functions, you will need to be able to directly influence them as well as articulate the impact of potential data related conflicts and manage and maintain mutually agreeable resolutions.

Reporting to the Head of Data Architecture within Global IT, you will have the opportunity to help shape the building of an enterprise-wide, scalable data organisation within Imperial Brands.

Key accountabilities

Governance execution

  • Lead the implementation of a Data Governance framework, including governance roles, forums, and associated tooling and processes
  • Serve as the main liaison between Data Owners and data governance, identify key business needs/issues that can be addressed using Data Governance standards and processes
  • Coordinate data governance activities, including the facilitation of Data Governance forums and SME working groups bringing together business and data stakeholders across functions
  • Regularly review progress of the Data Governance Strategy implementation with key business stakeholders, using defined KPIs to measure success
  • Regularly review progress with other Data Governance domain leads, identifying opportunities for scaling Data Governance standards and processes across domains, driving centralisation and standardisation of Governance activity
  • Analyse existing data governance practices to identify opportunities for improvement and scaling of Data Governance standards and processes across data assets, driving centralisation and standardisation of Governance activities across functions
  • Work closely with the Data Standards Managers and in flight data projects to manage the pipeline of change for specific data assets and identify the required Data Governance activities to support the delivery of the change.

Business Change

  • Promote a culture of data ownership by establishing Data Governance roles, such as data ownership and stewardship, working with colleagues across the organisation to ensure they are aware of their governance responsibilities
  • Support in driving the data agenda with senior stakeholders and data management teams by articulating the value and importance of effective data governance and the framework being implemented

Strategy and organisational development

  • Support the establishment of a data strategy and governance capability within the newly established enterprise-wide data organisation
  • Contribute to the development of an enterprise-wide data strategy and vision, aligned to business strategy and objectives
  • As the Data organisation grows, work to expand data governance activities into additional functions, continuously improving the approach based on feedback

Skills & Experience


  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent education and experience
  • Three to five years of data management experience
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing and managing data governance activities
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Understanding of data management and governance best practices
  • Strategic mindset, with extensive experience developing and delivering against business strategies and roadmaps
  • Demonstrable experience of ability to influence and secure buy-in from senior stakeholders across functions
  • Strong technical ability, including experience working with enterprise data platforms
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex data issues into simple messages for both business and technical audiences
  • Experience delivering change in complex, matrixed organisations


  • FMCG industry experience
  • Experience with the Microsoft Azure enterprise technology stack
