The role holder is responsible for setting the strategic framework for all of IMB’s product characterisation scientific substantiation activities to ensure current and future Duty of Care and regulatory requirements are met, aligned with the commercial agenda.  The role holder is also responsible for leading a team of product characterisation specialists to provide specialist technical advice in support of the product characterisation of the IMB product portfolio for tobacco and NGP.

Principle Accountabilities


  • Provide, to the highest professional standards, advice and interpretation related to the product characterisation and chemistry of ingredients, materials and finished products based on in-depth experience.
  • Manage the team of Product Characterisation Specialists engaged in characterising the IMB product portfolio, for tobacco and NGP, to ensure quality testing and result interpretation is completed in a cost-effective and timely manner. Act as a process owner of Product Characterisation processes and conduct trend analysis for continuous improvement insights to improve customer service and satisfaction.
  • Align with internal Laboratory management to ensure appropriate method design and implementation meeting accreditation Standards, that are fit for internal and regulatory purposes, for tobacco and NGP, to meet the company needs rapidly and cost-effectively.
  • Manage team member allocation to product innovation, regulatory projects and product research projects to ensure project timelines are met whilst escalating risks and bottleneck to the relevant project managers.
  • Manage team contribution to relevant technical and reporting compliance activities e.g. production of emission and chemical data for NGP
  • Provide expert advice for activities related to the Product Safety Risk Management and Change Control processes.
  • Manage testing with external Contract Research Organisations (CROs) and build effective relationships to support product characterisation testing.
  • Manage the process to monitor, evaluate and report the developments in product characterisation testing to support Duty of Care requirements for tobacco and NGP.
  • Represent the company externally in relevant industry groups and scientific conferences/meetings and write external publications or critiques
  • Manage the requirements and/or lead on discussions in the interpretation of new or amended regulations which have product characterisation relevance for tobacco and NGP.

Education, Key-Skills & Experience


  • Relevant experience with tobacco or nicotine products (> 5 years)
  • In-depth understanding of NGP and related science with sound professional judgement
  • Management experience & ability to enable teams
  • Strong and proven project management and external collaboration skills
  • Creative thinking and intellectual curiosity paired with a strong ability to understand complex relationships
  • Constructively challenges and solutions focused with ability to prioritise as appropriate
  • Ability to communicate easily across cultures and organisational levels and an ability to convey complex scientific information at an appropriate level (non-technical, senior management, Industry to Industry)
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to foster cross-functional collaboration
  • Strong Influencing & negotiating skills and experience
  • Credibility at a senior management level
  • Strategic perspective, able to assess and relate impacts of regulatory trends and initiatives on our business over short and long term


  • PhD in appropriate science
  • Experience in engaging externally with influential expert scientists
  • Willingness to travel internationally when required
  • Demonstrated experience (at least 5 years) in a highly regulated product category, with a knowledge and passion for science, technology, and regulatory affairs
